Kruger National Park and Private Reserves
South Africa’s largest and best known wildlife sanctuary with excellent big game viewing and birding. The private reserves that border the park offer exclusivity.
The Tuli Block
A group of private reserves and concessions make up this dramatic and scenic region of south-east Botswana, which offers some very good game-viewing and horse-riding safaris. Access is from South Africa.
The Waterberg Region
One national park and a series of private reserves make up this scenic and malaria-free region. Some good family, horse-riding and game-viewing options.
Madikwe Game Reserve
A big-five, malaria-free game reserve that is easily accessible from Johannesburg.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
A remote park with a limited road network and tourism infrastructure, but offers a genuine Kalahari Desert experience with some good game-viewing and interesting birding.
Tswalu Kalahari Game Reserve
A large private reserve offering a highly exclusive ‘Kalahari’ experience with upmarket accommodation, varied activities and great game-viewing.
Namaqualand
An extensive region of rocky hills and rolling plains, known primarily for amazing wild flowers in August/ early September.
Cape Town and the Cape Winelands
The most sophisticated corner of Africa, with beautiful scenery, lovely beaches, great restaurants, famous wine farms, varied sight-seeing attractions and activities, good birding and a huge range of accommodation options.
Hermanus
The whale capital of the world, with amazing viewings of ‘southern right’ whales from July to November. From December to April just a pleasant sea-side town with a great beach.
Cape Town and the Cape Winelands

Garden Route
A lush and scenic region where mountains, forest and the Indian Ocean collide. There are good beaches and plenty of sight-seeing attractions. Inland, the Karoo Desert offers a totally different and much drier landscape to explore.
Eastern Cape Game Reserves
One National Park and an ever-increasing number of private, malaria-free game reserves spread through this region. Big game viewing and exclusivity vary between reserves.
Drakensberg Mountains
South Africa’s highest and most dramatic mountains offer wonderful scenery, some excellent hiking options and some interesting birding.
Zulu War Battlefields
The famous Zulu War battlefields which can be visited on interesting guided tours include Rorke’s Drift and Ilsandwana.
Phinda Resource Reserve
Phinda is arguably the best of a number of big game reserves and national parks found in northern KwaZulu/Natal. Game-viewing is excellent at Phinda, and good in a few other places, and birding is superb throughout the region.
