Botswana

  • Dear Rob, I just wanted to say a massive thanks for delivering a great holiday – you fulfilled my brief perfectly, and exceeded all our expectations. All arrangements, transfers and accommodation were like clockwork, no concerns at all. We liked that Elephant Plains and Muchenje arranged for us to have the same guides throughout our stay, as this greatly enhances the relationships and communication. Elephant Plains was a great location, great food & great staff. Morné Fouche our guide was very professional – we loved the drives and game walks with him. Over 3 days we saw 7 different leopard, 4 different rhino and a big herd of buffalo, 800-1000 strong which Morné managed to park just ahead of, then they flowed all around the vehicle for 20-30 mins as they passed, unforgettable. Muchenje – great atmosphere, felt like home from home, fantastic location on the escarpment overlooking the floodplain. We enjoyed the full day out with boat trip, picnic lunch then a game drive back along the Chobe waterfront, with hundreds of elephant, buffalo, zebra & sable. We got a fantastic front row view of a lion hunt by a pride of 10 lions. Waterberry Lodge was a great end to the holiday – fantastic location and good food. We enjoyed the sunset cruise, fishing, hippos on the lawn and bird watching. So relaxing to just chill on the banks of the Zambezi. The visit to the Falls was great. We have great photos and great memories – thank you. We now have lots of ideas for return trips, and will not hesitate to contact you.

The Chobe National Park including the Savuti Channel

The Chobe is a huge National Park and covers an area of 11,000 sq. kms. Its habitats range from the floodplain and backwaters of the river systems to sand ridges, dry lake beds, riverine thickets/bush and mopane forest. The Chobe stretches south-westwards from Kasane and the Chobe River in the north, to the Mababe Depression (a dead lake area fed by the Savuti Channel) in the south. Except for the limited network of roads one lodge along the river, and three lodges in the Savuti area, there is little development within the park.

Most travellers to the Chobe concentrate either along the river frontage (based out of Kasane town), where a combination of boating safaris and game drives are on offer, or in the Savuti area (the Savuti area is spectacular in the drier months with high concentrations of elephant and lion populations. Aside from the wildlife, the San rock art is also an attraction). Travellers using mobile tented camps may have the opportunity to explore more remote areas of the park, but only during the dry season.

Although the birdlife is spectacular, the Chobe is perhaps more famous for its large herds, particularly elephant and buffalo which frequent the river courses. Elephants swimming in the Chobe River is a great attraction for many visitors, especially photographers. Amongst the 16 antelope species found, greater kudu are common, and the near endemic puku and Chobe bushbuck can also be seen.
